A brawl broke out at a middle school basketball game in Alburgh, Vermont.
The fight occurred during a game between Alburgh and St Albans.
Troopers were called to the scene, but the fight had ended by the time they arrived.
Russell Giroux, of Alburgh, sought medical attention and was taken to Northwestern Medical Center.
Giroux was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Vermont Principals’ Association, which oversees school sports, has no information about the event.
Spectators who cannot behave appropriately can be barred from events and face criminal charges.
Giroux’s death is under investigation by state police and the Grand Isle state’s attorney’s office.
An autopsy will be conducted by the Vermont medical examiner.
Alburgh is a town of about 2,100 people in northwestern Vermont, bordering Canada and surrounded by Lake Champlain.
